Thurman Cafe

Hello Friends,

I am an unashamed cuisine enthusiast, or "Foodie," so many of my adventures I post will involve food. I came across Thurman Cafe while watching Man Vs. Food (when Adam Richmond was hosting). I have actually been here quite a few times over the years before and after moving to the Columbus, Ohio area. The picture below is from the first time I went there in 2014, and the sign is no longer there. It is a tiny place in German Village outside of downtown Columbus know as having the "tastiest burgers in Columbus."

It definitely a dive bar with dark lighting (hence why the pictures aren't clear), minimal seating, and signed dollar bills all over the walls and booth benches. I haven't asked the story behind why people sign the dollar bills and they get taped up everywhere, but it's their "thing" to say they've been there and tried it. When I say tiny, I mean TINY. The dining area consists of a bar, some high tables that seat 2-3 people, and one row of booths. This tends to create quite a long wait time, especially on the weekends. I have only gone on weekends, so my wait times have been anywhere from 1-3 hours. I don't mind, and the loyal locals and curious tourists stick around regardless of the wait. We do get a fair share of annoyed people who loudly state on their way out the door, "I bet their burgers suck anyway." I just silently hope they are ahead of me, and I am one group closer to getting my seat.

The burgers are HUGE. Pictures don't do any justice, and everyone gets their phones out when the food arrives at their table in attempt to make others understand. I haven't met anyone who can finish an entire burger in one sitting. There's a variety of burger options as well. Our current favorites (pictured below) are the The Macedonian and the Thurman A-1 burger. We also tried the Poblano Bites recently as an appetizer and could've eaten about three plates of those. I admittedly have not explored much else other than burgers on the menu, but they have options for everyone. (Check out the menu.)

Is it worth it? I think so. As my brother has stated, "You can tell when a place is known for their burgers. The meat and ingredients are a higher quality, and it's always cooked spot on." On the other hand, I have brought people here who were immediately turned off by the wait time, didn't enjoy the dark atmosphere with loud music, and felt they could go somewhere else for the price. (Those people are also fun company on my adventures, so stay tuned for the Debbie-Downer opinions. They are nothing if not consistent.) Thurman Cafe is a hidden gem of the city that deserves to be tried at least once, and you definitely won't leave hungry.

Cedar Point's Boardwalk Nights

Step Right Up!     Cedar Point's Boardwalk Nights is a carnival-esque evening event featuring games, live entertainment, and themed food and drinks. There's also themed merchandise in the gift shops.  It occurs every night (except Tuesdays) July 19th-August 18th from 7pm-10pm. I  love that they're fully embracing the Boardwalk theme, as it's now one of my favorite areas to be in the park. When we attended Winter Chill Out earlier this year, it was on a sneak peek events poster in the costume building. While they didn't delve into the details, I'm glad they didn't spoil the surprises because this event is a lot more fun that I had anticipated.  $39.99     Boardwalk Nights starts off with a cavalcade at 7pm along the Boardwalk (between Windseeker and Gatekeeper). There were 3 floats, dancers, and kites. However, all 3 floats don't make it down the entire boardwalk. They start over near Gatekeeper/MaXair and stop in designated spots. One float stops...

Exploring Historic Downtown Ashland, Ohio

Hello!     I recently was feeling nostalgic and wanted to visit my old college town to see how it has changed for better or worse. I am an alum of Ashland University and I periodically miss those days, though they say you can never go back. If only. One of the things I loved about attending school there was being out in the quiet country. There was no hustle and bustle or noise of city life (or a more populated suburb). I miss the sense of peace it brought me. However, in recent years, they have built it up near the highway. More chain restaurants, apartments, and large corporations. I'm happy the college students have more options because some were really needed, but it definitely has made it noisier and ruined some of the country feel. I'm happy that the historic downtown closer to the university is being preserved with it's stunning architectural buildings and new small businesses. I wanted to take a look and see what downtown Ashland has to offer, with the help of ano...

Cedar Point's Winter Chill Out 2025

Happy Opening Week!     This post is far later than I wanted it to be. I did NOT anticipate posting Winter Chill Out a couple of days before opening day, but here we are 😬. I was sick for a couple of weeks after Winter Chill Out, then I've been in the process of interviewing for a new job for  the last 6 weeks (I got it though!). It's been a whirlwind of a month and a half, but full of new beginnings! I know the announcements in this post the public is now privy to, but I hope you stick around to read about our whole experience with this year's tour.      Tickets were changed from a lottery to first-come-first-serve this year. It started at 10am, and I got 3 error messages trying to enter the queue before getting into the virtual line. It took me about 30 minutes to get into the ticket window, which wasn't too bad. One of the first things I noticed was ticket prices increased from $75 last year to $100 this year. (All the money from this event g...
