I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
The weather has certainly changed and the smell of winter is in the Ohio air. Naturally, that means I begin craving comfort food. I was thrilled when Chrissy announced that she was making a 3rd cookbook in the Cravings collection, and I immediately bought my copy of Cravings All Together when it came out. As I stated in the Mother's Day Cravings post, I LOVE these cookbooks. I've made many of Chrissy and her mom, Pepper Thai's recipes and they've all turned out amazing. I know John Legend has a few of his own recipes in each book, but I hadn't made them. His recipes seem to give off a very relaxed and hanging-out-with-the-fam vibe. This time, I made a point to test out a couple of his recipes along with a couple of Chrissy's, of course. Forewarning: These recipes were not my most photogenic work, but I promise the flavors were all there.
I'm a bit of an egg snob. One of my biggest pet peeves is overcooked eggs, so I rarely let anyone cook them for me. Chrissy refers to John as the house "eggspert" and I was more than happy to put John's Perfect Omelet to the test. Side note: I appreciate that Chrissy puts Cholula hot sauce on her eggs. I've been doing that since I was a teenager and it's nice to know there's more hot-sauce-for-breakfast lovers out there. I went a bit overboard on the broccoli and cheese, so the omelets didn't close completely. They weren't exactly my preference of a pretty presentation. However, my fellow taste-tester thought the little opening in the omelet was a nice "sneak peek." I was a little skeptical of having broccoli and cheese for breakfast, but it was a great mild, creamy, and flavor-packed way to start the day. It also gave me nostalgia because it reminded me of the broccoli and cheese ring with crescent rolls that mom used to make when I was a kid.
For our next breakfast, we made John's Perfect Blueberry Pancakes. Oh My Lanta, these were fantastic. I was eating the batter while I was waiting for the pancakes to cook in the pan. They came out fluffy, golden and buttery, and the right touch of sweetness. It's everything you dream of for a weekend breakfast and chill. I want to make them again as I write this at 10 PM. I'll go ahead and say that this is my favorite recipe so far that I've made from this book. Hats off to John on this one.
You can't see them, but I promise blueberries were hiding inside |
One of my favorite things about Cravings All Together is that Chrissy has more vegetarian options in this book. I like a variety of stuff because I get bored easily. She also tapped in to my favorite Taco Bell staple: Cheesy Gordita Crunches. I get these almost on a weekly basis. It's a love affair. So when I saw the picture of the Chickpea Crunch-wraps and saw how similar they look to my beloved, I knew I had to make them. I was not disappointed. The assembly was a bit time consuming, but not so much that it deterred me. The filling packed a punch of creamy, salty, savory, and spicy that we didn't even notice the lack of meat. They were incredibly satisfying and a definite option for when I want a homemade version.
If you've never experienced Cookie Butter, you're missing out. I was first introduced to it as a Gelato flavor and it is one of my favorites. I was excited when I saw the recipe for Ginger Snap Cookie Butter. It was super simple to make and I had most of the ingredients on hand. Ginger Snaps work well for this time of year, but we wish we would've used Biscoff cookies like Chrissy hinted at using. There wasn't enough cookie flavor to it like we were expecting. I also wonder if it can be interchangeable with any type of cookie because thinking of making it with chocolate chip, sugar cookies, snickerdoodles, etc...also sounds good.
Surprise, surprise that this book is also a hit with us so far. I don't have many other cookbooks than the Cravings collection that literally everything I make is on point with flavor and the level of comfort I am looking for. You can order your own copy on Chrissy's Cravings website here. Have you tried any of the recipes in this book or the others? Let me know your thoughts!
