Hi Everyone,
Back in September (re: computer issues), we were highly anticipating the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2. We've done some home cooking posts and while I do enjoy those, I wanted something uncomplicated and easy to throw together. We made up all the names and "recipes" for our little Halloween themed party and it took less than an hour to throw it all together. Popped on a fun table cover, arranged all the food, lit the Black Flame Candle (not really), and we were ready for a little Hocus Pocus.
First up, we made some Muscles & Bones: Mozzarella cheese sticks wrapped in prosciutto. You can buy the cheese and prosciutto separately and wrap them yourselves, or buy them already wrapped in packages. We did the shortcut and bought them already wrapped. This is one of my favorite things. I like to use them for cheese boards with wine as well.
Eyeball Dip: Greek yogurt + French Onion Dip Mix. You can always use sour cream, but I wanted some protein and to feel somewhat healthy so I went with plain greek yogurt. The plastic eyeballs were in the Halloween section at the grocery store. We sliced up a red bell pepper for dipping. I wish we would've had some more veggies like carrots and celery for a variety.
Witches Brooms: Pretzel rods + white chocolate (we used Ghiradelli) + sprinkles. Since we were going for quick, we microwaved the white chocolate in a small bowl and used a spoon to pour it onto the pretzel rods. Set the chocolate pretzels on parchment paper for a minute or two before using the sprinkles or they will drip off with the chocolate immediately. This was one of the best things we had set out. I could sit there and eat 12 of them without blinking.
Bloody Fries: fries (any kind; we used straight cut) + pizza sauce + shredded mozzarella + mushrooms + green peppers + onion + turkey pepperoni. These are inspired by the famous Pizza Fries at Universal Studios-Halloween Horror Nights. While I haven't been to HHN (hopefully someday) to try the real deal, I love making them at home. We've made so many different versions of these; just add all your favorite pizza toppings and you can't go wrong.
Graveyard Pudding: Chocolate pudding + crushed Oreos + candy bones. This was a spin on the classic dirt pudding. We used Godiva Dark Chocolate pudding and I honestly need to know where that has been my whole life. It was seriousy decadent. The Oreos added the perfect amount of crunch. I loved the flavor of the candy bones. They were almost like sweet tarts and also found in the Halloween section of the grocery store. The RIP coffins we put them in were found at Walmart and easily fit 2 servings of pudding.
Witches Brew: blackberry cider + spiced rum. We did 3 oz of spiced rum and filled the rest of the cup with the blackberry cider. The cups were also from Walmart and I love the iradescent coloring of the skulls. The blackberry and spices didn't mix well together and the cider was a bit too sweet. We won't be making that again.
While this Halloween Party wasn't extravagant by any means, I liked how simple putting the food together was and it didn't require a lot of effort. The standouts were easily the Witches Brooms, Pizza Fries, and Graveyard Pudding. Someday I will make it to Halloween Horror Nights to see what all the fuss is about with the original pizza fries. The Witches Brew unfortunately wasn't what I had hoped it would be, so if anyone has any ideas for a drink using blackberry cider, I am all ears!
Hello! I recently was feeling nostalgic and wanted to visit my old college town to see how it has changed for better or worse. I am an alum of Ashland University and I periodically miss those days, though they say you can never go back. If only. One of the things I loved about attending school there was being out in the quiet country. There was no hustle and bustle or noise of city life (or a more populated suburb). I miss the sense of peace it brought me. However, in recent years, they have built it up near the highway. More chain restaurants, apartments, and large corporations. I'm happy the college students have more options because some were really needed, but it definitely has made it noisier and ruined some of the country feel. I'm happy that the historic downtown closer to the university is being preserved with it's stunning architectural buildings and new small businesses. I wanted to take a look and see what downtown Ashland has to offer, with the help of ano...
